Burgaudeau chute, Van der Poel dans le dur, des bordures : un début d'étape très animé !

Ils sont 173 à prendre le départ de la 6e étape du Tour de France, l'Italien Daniel Oss (Team TotalEnergies) ayant rejoint Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) et Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) dans la catégorie des abandons. Dès le kilomètre 0, plusieurs coureurs tentent de prendre la poudre d'escampette, ce qui n'est pas le cas de Mathieu Burgaudeau, qui chute lourdement après quelques minutes de course. Bien éraflé sur le côté gauche, le Français du Team TotalEnergies repart, mais sa journée va être pénible, surtout ce que ça roule très fort au sein du peloton.

Si fort que certains hommes ont dû mal accrocher les roues, et notamment Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), qui souffre en ce début d'étape, mais aussi Guillaume Martin (Cofidis). Le vent soufflant de côté, on assiste même à des bordures, même si tout rentre dans l'ordre quelques instants plus tard. Trois hommes parviennent ensuite à fausser compagnie au peloton, en l'occurrence Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën Team), Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo) et Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), le deuxième de l'étape de la veille.

Van Aert, Pogacar, Vingegaard... les cadors se montrent sur cette 6e étape

Partis avec un temps de retard, Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) et Amund Grondahl Jansen (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) tentent de rentrer, mais le Belge et le Danois butent et se font rejoindre par un peloton qui ne s'est pas calmé. Le maillot jaune,Wout Van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma), a notamment des fourmis dans les jambes, et tout cela ne permet pas au trio de tête de franchement creuser l'écart. Cosnefroy, Van der Hoorn et Skujins se font d'ailleurs reprendre à 180 kilomètres de Longwy. Une vingtaine de coureurs prennent ensuite un peu de champ, avec en son sein Van Aert, mais aussi quelques-uns des favoris du Tour de France, dont Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Jonas Vingegaard (Team Jumbo-Visma), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) et Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe) !

Le peloton ne peut pas laisser partir un tel groupe et revient une nouvelle fois, puis dix coureurs prennent à leur tour une trentaine de secondes d'avance sur le peloton : Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Team Emirates), Christophe Laporte (Team Jumbo-Visma), Stan Dewulf (AG2R Citroën Team), Kasper Asgreen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education-EasyPost), Connor Swift (Team Arkéa-Samsic) et Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo).

Un trio a la peau du peloton... Wout Van Aert et Jakob Fuglsang à l'avant !

On croit alors que c'est le bon coup... mais de nouvelles relances ont lieu au sein du peloton et cela condamne le groupe de tête, sur lequel était revenu en costaud Franck Bonnamour (B&B Hotels-KTM). Tout ça redonne envie à Wout Van Aert de repartir à l'attaque, le Belge ayant décidé de se faire plaisir ce jeudi. Il sort du peloton en compagnie de Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech) et Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo). Après une certaine résistance de la part du peloton, on laisse finalement filer les trois hommes... après 80 kilomètres de bagarre, l'échappée du jour est enfin constituée !

Le peloton réagit, l'écart diminue, Jakob Fuglsang et Simmons laissent Van Aert partir seul

Grimpant rapidement, l'écart entre le trio de tête et le peloton atteint 4 minutes, puis deux équipes, aux objectifs bien différents, décident de sonner la fin de la récréation et de venir rouler : les UAE Team Emirates de Tadej Pogacar, qui ne veulent pas laisser trop de marge à Fuglsang, et Alpecin-Deceuninck, qui vise la victoire d'étape. Les formations BORA-hansgrohe et EF Education-EasyPost mettent aussi quelqu'un à l'avant du peloton, et logiquement, l'écart commence à décroître. A Carignan, au sprint intermédiaire, Van Aerten profite pour empocher 20 points pour le classement du maillot vert. Jasper Philipsen règle le peloton pour la 4e place, devant Fabio Jakobsen et Christophe Laporte.

À 65 kilomètres de l'arrivée, après de nombreuses tractations et alors que l'écart n'est plus que d'1'45", Jakob Fuglsang décide de se relever, laissant Van Aert et Simmons poursuivre en duo. Malheureusement pour ces deux hommes, les quatre équipes qui roulaient avant le décrochage de Fuglsang continuent leur travail de sape. A 35 bornes du but, le duo de tête ne compte plus qu'1'30". Cinq kilomètres plus loin, sur un relai appuyé de Van Aert, Simmons n'en peut plus et craque, laissant le Maillot Jaune seul devant pour un nouveau numéro solitaire. Mais avec seulement une minute d'avance, le Belge aura bien du mal à aller au bout cette fois.

Les sprinteurs lâchés, Wout van Aert repris puis distancé !

Pris à son propre piège, Wout van Aert engage un beau bras de fer avec le paquet. Lancé dans un contre-la montre individuel de 30 km, le Maillot Jaune résiste mais voit le peloton se rapprocher à 30" à 17 kilomètres de la ligne. Les formation de leaders entament la guerre du placement à l'approche des trois difficultés qui vont s'enchaîner dans ce final musclé. Dans la première d'entre elles, laCôte de Montigny-sur-Chiers, les sprinteurs commeGroenewegen,Ewan, ouJakobsenlâchent déjà, tour comme Mathieu van der Poel, décidément pas en forme. Wout van Aert franchit le sommet avec moins de 20" d'avance.

Une chute intervient dans la descente ralentissant certains coureurs comme Valentin Madouas. Kobe Goossens(Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) semble le plus touché et a du mal à repartir. Dans la bosse suivante, non répertoriée, Van Aert est repris, à 11 bornes du but. Le Maillot Jaune se relève même et est directement distancé suite à ses nombreux efforts ! On aura donc un changement de leader ce soir, Neilson Powless devient leader virtuel du général au moment d'entrer dans les 10 derniers kilomètres.

Vlasov chute mais revient, Vuillermoz tente sa chance, Pogacar trop fort au sprint !

A l'approche de la redoutéeCôte de Pulventeux, la tension est maximale, et ça tombe à nouveau dans un virage ! Aleksandr Vlasov est impliqué, le leader de la BORA-hangsrohe repart et entame la chasse avec ses coéquipiers. Devant la BikeExchange-Jayco mène grand train pour Michael Matthews. Les leaders temporisent dans les pourcentage les plus forts, moment choisi par Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) pour attaquer ! Le Français passe au sommet avec quelques secondes d'avance sur un groupe très réduit, alors que Pogacar tentent une petite attaque, rapidement suivi par David Gaudu, sans succès.

A moins de 5 kilomètres, le Jurassien donne tout dans la descente, mais la Jumbo-Visma embraye derrière, à 5". La côte des Religieuses qui mène à Longwy est abordée tambours battant. Vuillermoz est finalement repris à 1,5 km par les UAE Team Emirates et Rafal Majka,alors que Powless s'accroche pour le Jaune. Matthews est dans une position idéale. Roglic lance le sprint, mais Pogacar accélère. Surpuissant, le Slovène creuse un écart et s'en va remporter l'étape à Longwy ! Matthews finit 2e, Gaudu 3e. Pogacar fait coup double et sa pare de Jaune grâce aux bonifications !
